How To Make the Most of 2013

If you're planning to make your 2013 amazing (as we all do at the beginning of each year), here’s a list of things you can look forward to. They are a collection of popular, weird or wonderful events and festivals you can attend.

If you are a Kaplan student at any of our schools, you can attend some of them with your Kaplan friends.

January

Chocolate convention - Jan 27, USA

Only one hour from New York City, Chocolate World Expo is the New York area's largest chocolate-themed event and it is a day of fun and high sugar levels for those of you who love chocolate.

February

Valentine’s Day –  Feb 14, Worldwide

This is a great day for those who wish to express their love to their special someone in a romantic way. Learn more about the history of this lovely celebration here.

If you are single and enjoy being single, you can choose to boycott the celebration and customize your own fun day. You may even call it Anti-Valentine’s Day.

Sky Lantern Festival - Feb 24, Taiwan

If you happen to be visiting PingShi, Taiwan at the end of February, make sure you don’t miss this spectacular display of lights.

March

St. Patrick's Day - March 17, Ireland

Saint Patrick’s Day is the most iconic Irish celebration when people wear shamrocks and green clothes in honor of Saint Patrick (learn more). Kaplan students in Dublin always have a great time dressing up and celebrating it.

Earth Hour is also happening in March (23rd). Take part and make a difference in your life and others’.

April’s Fools – April 1, Everywhere

April’s Fools is a tradition shared by people all over the world and it’s a great excuse for playing pranks on other people (generally your friends). Here are examples of classic pranks

Fashion Weekend - May 10-13, Sydney, Australia

You can choose to buy designer clothes at great discounts, have a total makeover or watch fashion shows on this trendy weekend in Sydney.(Learn more)

Sydney Comedy Festival – April 22 – May 11

If you enjoy a good laugh (and who doesn’t?), have a ‘hilarious’ day at the Sydney Comedy Festival.

June

The Queen's Birthday - June 10, London, UK

Although she was actually born on April 21, the official birthday of Queen Elizabeth II is celebrated each year in the UK on a weekend in June. The day usually presents more acceptable weather for a public party. Tickets for the Trooping the Colour ceremony are currently being sold until February so make sure you get yours soon. (Read more)

The Royal Baby - due July, UK

The Duchess and Duke of Cornwall’s first-born is due in July and people around the world are speculating what the baby’s name will be. Some betting houses are taking bets on things such as the weight or hair colour of the royal baby. The birth is something everyone can look forward to, just like the royal wedding.

August

Edinburgh Festival Fringe - August 2 -26, Scotland

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the largest arts festival in the world and takes place every August for three weeks in Scotland’s capital city. The festival includes theatre, comedy, dance, physical theatre, musicals, operas, music, exhibitions and events from big names in the world of entertainment to unknown artists. If you study at Kaplan Edinburgh, make sure you attend and enjoy yourself to the fullest.

Oxford Open Doors - Sept. 12-15, Oxford

Oxford Open Doors day is the only day you can have access to a great variety of interesting buildings and spaces that are not normally open to the public. (Learn more)

If you study in Torquay and enjoy crime fiction, you can attend The Agatha Christie Festival from the 15th until the 22nd September.

October

OktoberFest - Munich, Germany

More than 6 million people from around the world attend this fun event every year in Munich, Germany. Other cities across the world also hold Oktoberfest celebrations, after the original Munich event which has been held since 1810. (Find out more)
